Pre-Thaw Soviet Yiddish Journals

What follows is a selection of various Soviet journals, primarily from the 1930s. Literature and history are the primary areas of coverage. Two different Birobidzhan publications show the poverty and perseverance of the Jewish colonists. An early Yevsktzia journal shows the fervor of the early years. In the glowing light of hind-sight Ruth Weiss condemns the Jewish left. Yet, it is there looking back at us from the traces that remain of Jewish life lived under the broad shadow of a god that failed. Shame on us if we can't make something of all of their efforts.
