Nazi Eugenics - Genocide and Lebensborn

In the hand of evils dealt to our American adventure the cards face up are slavery and the genocide of the native population. But in our down cards we hold the most of the origins and much of the development of the Eugenics movement. When Adolf Hitler was still a child the many of the most prominent American philanthropists supported the Eugenics movement. Edwin Black has written persuasively about the tight association between American Eugenics and Nazi Eugenics. Eugenics is the dominant idea that explains the full constellation of Nazi "medicine." He records the inspiration of Nazi Genocide in American Eugenicist's efforts: "Eighteen solutions were explored in a Carnegie-supported 1911 "Preliminary Report of the Committee of the Eugenic Section of the American Breeder's Association to Study and to Report on the Best Practical Means for Cutting Off the Defective Germ-Plasm in the Human Population." Point No. 8 was euthanasia.
The most commonly suggested method of eugenicide in the United States was a "lethal chamber" or public, locally operated gas chambers. In 1918, Popenoe, the Army venereal disease specialist during World War I, co-wrote the widely used textbook, "Applied Eugenics," which argued, "From an historical point of view, the first method which presents itself is execution . . . Its value in keeping up the standard of the race should not be underestimated." "Applied Eugenics" also devoted a chapter to "Lethal Selection," which operated "through the destruction of the individual by some adverse feature of the environment, such as excessive cold, or bacteria, or by bodily deficiency."
Below are various works in German describing Nazi Euthanasia against the disabled and other non-Jewish undesirables. There are also others that describe the Lebensborn program which was meant to produce the new and improved Master Race.
Black wrote the article quoted below to praise the 2003 passage of the first bill in the US that prohibited discrimination on the basis of Genetic information. Deceptive and forced sterilizations were performed in Los Angeles among the Latino community in between the 1950s and 1970s and was performed in California women's prisons as recently as 2010. I won't even comment on recent events. There is a reason to be interested in the collection of books listed below that I hope I have made clear enough.
All of these titles are currently available on the Hollander Books website.

Moses Maimonides Medical Writing and works on Maimonidean Medicine.

Moses Maimonides was one of the major figures in the field of Arab and Jewish medieval medicine. Despite uncertainty about the nature of his medical training in the historical record it is clear that by the time he had arrived in Egypt he had as thorough a training as was available at the time. He appears to have had an eidetic memory. In Egypt his knowledge of halakhah was such that he quickly rose to the position of an unassailable poskin. David Maimonides had been the breadwinner of the extended family. He was a trader in rare gems and when he was lost at sea his stock in trade was lost with him. After the death of his father and shortly afterwards the death of his brother as sea Moses was forced from the simpler path that his life might have taken and became a professional physician. His fame grew over time and he became the physician to the court of Saladin. He acted as Saladin's personal physician, but was also the physician to all of Saladin's family and harem as well as the high officials of state. Such was the weight laid upon him by his medical practice that between the court and the public Moses worked from early morning until as late as two hours after sunset seeing patients. His communal service to the Jewish community was performed only on Shabbat and was as exhausting as his regimen as a healer.
Moses Maimonides best know works during the medieval period were his own Medical aphorisms and his anthology of extracts from Galen. His Treatise on Poisins was also respected and reprinted several times in the era printed era. His greatest significance comes from his role as a transmitter across the divide from the ancient world to the emerging Arab and subsequently European scholarly world and in his role as the ideal of the model physician. He was an advocate in his time of what we might characterize as holistic, patient centered care (as well as his advocacy of what we now call, "well care," rehabilitative medicine and occupational medicine).
We were recently able to get from amoung a large trove of books on Jewish medicine copies of all of the volumes of Maimonides Medical Writings. The set, edited primarily by Fred Rosner, made all of Maimonides known medical works in English translation. We have a limited number of complete sets. This set includes the works mentioned above as well as The Three Treatises on Health, Commentary on the Aphorims of Hippocrates, the Treatise on Asthma, as well as the Glossary of Drug Names, which was though to be lost until a manuscript was located in the early twentieth century. All of these volumes are available as part of the full set or individually. Because of short quantities, the fifth volume, The Art of Cure. Extracts from Galen, is available only as part of a complete set. Includes in this post we also offer two other titles by Fred Rosner on Maimonides. Further posts on Jewish medicine are forthcoming shortly (after 2/10/2017).

The Hebrew Physician/ Ha-Rofe Ha-Ivri

American Jewry before the Second World War was still subject to discrimination and quotas to a sufficiently substantial degree that publications such as Moses Einhorn's The Hebrew Physician had a purpose beyond simple chauvinism. I sometimes use the term "Jewish Medicine." Unlike the term "Jewish Medical Ethics," I don't really believe that it describes something that actually exists. Perhaps, "Jews in Medicine," would be a better fit but it just doesn't role off my tongue. Thus, the title proves to be a fitting title. "Ha-Rofe Ha-Ivri" brought together articles of concern to a Jewish audience in a way that no secular medical journal would have.
The articles in "The Hebrew Physician" address current medical issues in the wider medical community. These articles may have appeared in "The Hebrew Physician" because they were not successfully placed in mainstream medical publications. Einhorn was a gastroenterologist and they is some bias towards that medical specialty. There are articles about Jewish medical practices as depicted in Torah, Talmud and Halakhah. There are articles on Medicine in Mandate Palestine and early Israel as well as Hadassah Hospital specifically. There are also articles on Hebrew Medical terminology in Jewish texts and in Modern Hebrew. Special issues focus on Sigmund Freud, Saul Tchernicovsky, Wartime Conditions (Second World War), and Diabetes.
Publication began in 1927 and continued through 1963 (or 1965 by some accounts) It was interrupted between 1928-29, 1931-32 and 1934-35.
Einhorn was active in American Jewish communal activities and in the efforts to create Medical organization in Mandate Palestine. Most of his family remained in Europe and were lost. He edited the Yizkor book for Wolkovisk which is one of the most useful and detailed of all of the Yizkor Bikher. Einhorn died in early 1966.
