American Rabbinics to 1950 - Part One

The first part of a larger list of Rabbinics published in America. The scope of the list includes only volumes published through 1950. These mostly fall outside of the range of the YG bibliography on American Hebrew Publishing and as such are probably dismissed. I think that there are valuable questions to be raised and replied to by these volumes. That question is: how did the Rabbinic leadership of Orthodox Jewry respond in their teachings to the challenges of the decline in the religiosity of the American Jewish community in the inter-war years and in the response to the holocaust in the years leading up to it, during and immediately after afterwards. This will ultimately be a small sample of a larger whole (even with all parts combined).

These three titles by Berger appear to be all of the works that he published.  Sefer She'erit Yaakov al mo'adim ve-Yamim nora'im has a separate title, but is meant to be the second volume of
Kol Yisra'el haverim

Bernstein, S[imon]. Ba-Hazon Ha-Dorot: masot u-Drashot. New York, Bloch Publishing Company, 1928. Octavo, purple cloth with gold lettering, 223 pp. Hardbound. Very Good. In Hebrew (22025)

This title is included as rabbinics because of the authors literary interest in homiletics. Bernstein was an active Zionist beginning in 1912 and was a active worker within the Zionist field as well in the study of Hebrew literature, a venture which was closely tied to his Zionism. His obituary as published by Jewish Telegraph Agency follows:

NEW YORK, Dec. 18 (JTA) –
Dr. Simon Bernstein, prominent author, scholar and veteran Zionist, died here last night at the age of 80. He was an expert on Hebrew poetry of the Middle Ages, and the author of numerous works on the subject.

Soon after his graduation, Dr. Bernstein embarked upon his civil service career to further the cause of Zionism which was so dear to him. He became secretary of the Central Committee of the Zionist Organization in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1908, a position which he held for three years.
From 1912 until the outbreak of the First World War he served as secretary of the World Zionist Executive in Berlin, Germany. Later he served in London as secretary of the Organization Department of the World Zionist Organization.
He came to the United States in 1922 where he served as director of the Palestine Bureau of the Jewish Agency until his retirement in 1949. He edited Dos Yiddishe Folk, organ of the ZOA, since 1922. Manoah studied history under Salo Baron. His thesis was published under the title "The cooperative credit movement in Palestine." This title shows that his interests ran farther afield than history. However, this may have been a publication for hire for the New York day school market.

Epstein's education and early career has some similarity to that of Charney above including a time in Bayonne, New Jersey. He did also have a secular education and a strong and early connection to Zionism beginning in the Hibat Zion period. After some rough early years in America due to his strong advocacy of Kashrut he found a position in St. Louis where he remained until his death. For More.

[He was] a powerful, charismatic preacher and communal leader, author of nine volumes of derush widely used by other rabbis of his day as sermonic material, an activist deeply involved in the issues of the day, especially the movement to create a Jewish homeland, who dedicated several of his books to his children, whom he hoped would one day merit “to go up to Zion with joyous song.” Specifics of these publications are discussed in Yossi Goldman's Hebrew Printing in America.
