Official British Annual Reports on Mandate Palestine 1925, 1933 and four of the intervening years

These reports by the British colonial government catalog the laws created and enforced with statistics and analysis. In their cold bureaucratic way they tell a great deal of the quotidian story of Mandate Palestine. The volume for 1933 includes twenty sub-sections within the main section Palestine (other sections are Trans-Jordan and Appendices) which are: Jewish National Home Autonomous Administration, Jewish Agency, Immigration and Emigration, Land Regime, Nationality, Judicial System, Economic Equality, Holy Places, Freedom of Conscience, Military Clauses, International Agreements Conventions and Treaties, Antiquities, Official Languages, Holy Days, Trans-Jordan (refers you to the large section - very British), Labour, Trade in and Manufacture of Drugs Arms and Liquors, Education, Public Health, Public Finance, Demographic Statistics, Customs Excise and Trade, Posts Telegraphs and Telephones, Agriculture Forests and Fisheries, Public Works Geology and Mining and (lastly) Railways.
Perhaps it is just me that is interested in these sorts of things. Back when I was still in Junior High School I became so obsessed with a 1943 pocket encyclopedia of the US that another kid had that I insisted that he sell it to me. $5.00 was the price that we settled on. He thought he had made a killing but honestly I couldn't have been more thrilled. Sometimes the little details in all their dryness can be the sharpest spurs on the imagination. Like I said, maybe its just me.

Nineteenth Century Translations into Hebrew

In my previous post of translations into Modern Hebrew I mentioned that translation is a way that a language can stretch out culturally and linguistically. That process is not a new thing. Below are a few items that were produced in the nineteenth century. The first was an academic effort and the second seems have been done for pleasure. Both are available at the hollanderbooks.com website subject to prior sale.

Derenbourg, Joseph, edited by. Deus Versions Hebraïques du livre de Kalilah et Dimnah: La Premiere Acompagnee D'Une Traducation Francaise, publees, D'Apres les Manuscrits de Paris et D'Oxford. Paris, F. Vieweg, Librarie-Editeur, 1881. Octavo, maroon cloth spine, red paper and marbled paper covered boards with a printed pastedown printed panel on the front board, x, 396 pp., notes. Hardbound. Very Good. Text is in Hebrew with French translations, notes and introduction. "Kalilah wa-Dimnah (The Fables of Bidpai)  is a translation and expansion of a popular Indian collection of stories called the Panchatantra. Translations of some of these stories into Hebrew started to appear in the medieval period via an earlier Persian translations from the original Sanskrit. This is the first printed edition of some of those manuscripts. There have been several more editions published since then, one additional academically oriented edition and others meant for the popular audience. (71903)      $125.00

Mose. Medico di Rieti/ R. Mosheh bar Yitshak di Rieti. Sefer Mikdash Me'at/ Il Dante Ebreo ossia Il Picciol Santuario, Poema didattico in terza rima, contente la Filosofia antica e tutta la storia letteraria giudaica sino all' eta sua. Vienna, Ora per la prima volta secondo un manuscritto rarissimo deli Augustinissima Biblioteca Palatina in Vienna, confrontato con un altro privato non, Dr. J. Goldenthal, 1851. 16mo, paper covers with some soiling, wear and creases at the corners, xxxii, 268 pp. Light foxing. Hardbound. Very Good. Text is in Hebrew. Published by Yakov Goldenthal on the occasion of his wedding. Di Rieti did not actually translate Dante into Hebrew. What he did was translate the Dantean style from Italian into Hebrew. This is somewhat similar to the many adaptations of medieval epic literature into more Judaized Yiddish forms. (71909)     $200.00

Translations into Hebrew from American Literature and some additions from World Literature

My business card reads, "Every Kind of Jewish Book." My stock includes a wide variety of translations of World literature into Hebrew and Yiddish. Hebrew translations are now a major part of Israeli Book publishing and the variety of sources that the Israeli Publishing Industry mines is surprisingly diverse. Below is a selection from authors who would be known to the average American reader. Translations are a major element in the formation of mature national literatures and for the Hebrew language an opportunity to introduce new linguistic opportunities. These title are available through the hollanderbooks.com website, subject to prior sale.

Rare or uncommon items about Women's Suffrage in England

Recently, while taking apart a decrepit palimpsest of Yiddish pamphlets on various left causes I found these English language pamphlets included at the rear. These sorts of volumes turn up for me often enough, but I don't remember ever finding English language materials included with the Yiddish materials. It is, however, not hard to imagine how these might have come into the hands of a radicalized Whitehall Jew. Whitehall in the pre-World War One period was a seething cauldron of leftist, socialist, communist, Zionist, anarchist, and Suffragist activity. Below are descriptions of the pamphlets and their authors from a fascinating place and a fascinating time.

The Pamphlets

Burrows, Herbert. The Future of Woman: A Lecture delivered to the South Place Ethical Society, London, February 14th, 1909 (Published by Request). London, Twentieth Century Press, Ltd., March, 1909. Octavo, stapled paper covers, 16 pp., with minor wear to the spine edge. This pamphlet was bound into a larger volume and has been disbound with the original covers retained. Softbound. Good. Burrows lecture includes many citations from the writings of Olive Shreiner to whom the pamphlet is dedicated. Includes at the end, "We, As Women," by Charlotte Perkins Stetson.
Burrows was the son of a Chartist. The Chartists were a working class movement for universal male suffrage. He continued in that struggle in his early life and expanded his horizons to the struggle first for women's rights and economic relief and later on the issue of Women's Suffrage. He was involved with Annie Besant both as a labor organizer and as a theosophist. This pamphlet comes from the late period of political life. He ran for parliament in 1908 as a member of the Social Democratic Federation which he had belonged to since its inception in 1881 but lost. Two years later, after the intervening publication of this pamphlet he left the SDF and retired from politics. (71980)     Sold

Earl of Selborne [William Waldegrave Palmer, 2nd Earl of Selborne]. Address delivered by the Earl of Selborne, Hotel Cecil, March 9th, 1911. London, Conservative and Unionist Women's Franchise Association, 1911. Octavo, stapled paper covers, 16 pp., with minor wear to the spine edge. This pamphlet was bound into a larger volume and has been disbound with the original covers retained or not (it is hard to tell). Softbound. Good. The Earl and his wife (Beatrix) Maud Palmer became very involved in the struggle for Women's sufferage after the Earl resigned from his position as the High Commissioner in South Africa and Governor of the Transvaal and the Orange River Colony in 1910. Although the Earl of Selborne began as a member of the Liberal party, which in later years was the stronger source of support for Women's Suffrage, he was by this point quite entrenched in the Conservative Party. This is a clear example of the way that the Sex War that was so much an aspect of the Suffrage struggle cut across society in ways that did not in any map to the general political situation in Britain. Appears to be held only by the British Library. (71981)      Sold

Lawrence, Emmeline Pethick. The Faith That Is In Us (A Verbatim Report of a Speech delivered at the Aldwych Theatre.). London, The Woman's Press, c. 1909. Third Edition. Octavo, stapled paper covers worn along the spine, 16 pp. This pamphlet was bound into a larger volume and has been disbound with the original covers retained. Softbound. Good. Many institutions hold microfilm of this but only a few hold the actual item.
Lawrence Pethick and her husband Frederick William Pethick-Lawrence took each others last names at their marriage in 1901 and later hyphenated their names to Pethick-Lawrence. They were involved with the Women's Social and Political Union originally organized by Emmeline Pankhurst. They were all arrested during a window breaking campaign in 1912 for which both were sentenced to prison time. During this imprisonment Emmeline Lawrence Pethick endured force-feeding. Disputes over method found the Lawrence-Pethick's expelled from the WSPU after their release. As mentioned in the following pamphlet, they left the country for Canada in order to recover from their incarceration. Frederick was sent to work on a farm in Sussex towards the end the First World War due to his Conscientious Objector status. The success of the movement and the war limited their role in Suffrage after 1913 but they continued on as progressive and Labour party figures. In government, Frederick served as Secretary of State for India and Burma between 1945 and 1947 and was active in the negotiations that led to a free India. (71977)  Sold

Lawrence, Emmeline Pethick. In Women's Shoes: Mrs. Pethick Lawrence's Speech before Mr. Justic Darling, at the Law Courts, on June 7th, 1913; with Biographical Sketch and extracts from the Judge's summing up. London, The "Votes for Women" Publishing Office, 1913. Third Edition. Octavo, stapled paper covers worn along the spine, 16 pp. This pamphlet was bound into a larger volume and has been disbound with the original covers retained. Softbound. Good. Rare. (71978)     Sold

Pankhurst, Mrs. [Emmeline]. The Importance of the Vote (A Lecture delivered at the Portman Rooms, on Tuesday, March 24th, 1908.). London, The Woman's Press, March, 1913. Eighth Edition. Octavo, stapled paper covers, 12 pp., with minor wear to the spine edge. This pamphlet was bound into a larger volume and has been disbound with the original covers retained. Softbound. Good.
Emmeline Pankhurst is a sufficiently well-known figure that I needn't speak generally about her. Most important to say is that she led the most radical element of the struggle for Women's Suffrage. In their time those advocating Suffrage for Women were know as Suffragists. Only the radicals like Pankhurst were referred to as Suffragettes. She endured force feeding during one of her imprisonments and ended it by threatening to violently resist further force feeding. The idea within the Suffragist movement that violence (if only violence against property and sometimes the police) was warranted came in large part from the great violence that these women suffered in the pursuance of their activism. Pankhurst eventually created a bodyguard of trained women to protect her. Her embrace of violence as an activist means caused a lifelong break with two of her three daughters despite their own strong loyalty to the cause.   (71979)   Sold

Some Landsmanshaften Constitutions

In the important reference book on the Jewish Landsmanshaften, Di Yidishe Landsmanshaften fun Nyu York, produced by the WPA in 1938 there is a chapter on the Constitutions of the Landsmanshaften by E. Fershleyser. These Constitutions were vital matters though their contents seemed dry.
Unlike the early Constitutions of American synagogues these institutions received from their members genuine institution loyalty. The demands made of members seemed reasonable and the benefits that they offered were irreplaceable and as a result valued highly. If you were the son [or daughter] of a small Polish town you couldn't just get irritable about any little thing and go and start another society for residents of that town. Aside from the simple social value of having a place to go outside of you own small apartment or room the members of the Landsmanshaften had a kind of club house to go to where you weren't a stranger. The big city of New York was that much less lonely. In addition to that basic benefit, the Landsmanshaften provided marriage benefits (and some supervision), sick benefits, assistance with Shiva, assistance in times of financial need, cemetery plots and burial benefits, as well as, in many cases, synagogues where their sons could be Bar Mitzvahed (sorry girls, nothing for you here). It is interesting to see in the different documents just how much paternal interest the societies intended to or actually claimed in the ways that the most significant events in their member's lives took place.
Hannah Kliger in her edited and abridged translation of Di Yidishe Landsmanshaften fun Nyu York, translated this essay ( in Jewish Hometown Associations and Family Circles in New York) and has an essay, "That Will Make You a Good Member: The Rewards of Reading the Constitutions of Jewish Immigrant Associations" in A Double bond: the constitutional documents of American Jewry,
edited by Daniel Judah Elazar; Jonathan D Sarna; Rela M Geffen.
We offer here a few Landsmanshaften Constitutions and a Gemilut Hesed document. These are available for sale at hollanderbooks.com. Subject to prior sale.
